Transforming the Inner and Outer Family: Humanistic and Spiritual
Approaches to Mind/ Body Systems Therapy
In 1988, Dr. Sheldon Kramer co-taught a graduate class with Virginia
Satir, the renowned family therapy pioneer. The class focused on
healing and the sacred dimensions of relationships. Haworth Press
published Transforming the Inner and Outer Family: Humanistic and
Spiritual Approaches to Mind/ Body Systems Therapy, a book Kramer
wrote which grew out of that course and subsequent conversations
Kramer had with Satir before she died in 1989.
Kramer says his new book is about "creating healthy, nurturing
relationships with yourself and others including your family."
He adds the book is designed for therapists who want to learn Kramer's
short-term, transformative therapy model and for non-therapists
who want to understand how a therapist engages in therapeutic healing.
A self-help section provides mind/body tools for use in relationships.
Woven throughout the book are conversations between Satir and Kramer
on healing relationships. A main thrust of the book is how to utilize
relationships to experience spiritual dimensions of love, compassion,
forgiveness, tolerance, patience and humility.
